A port city in the southeast of South Australia, in southern Australia. It is located on the east coast of northern Spencer Gulf, about 200km north of Adelaide. Population 15,000 (1987). It is the shipping port for lead and zinc ore mined in Broken Hill (about 350km northeast), and has a large lead smelter (opened in 1889). It also exports wheat from the surrounding agricultural and livestock areas, making it the state's second largest port in terms of export value. Founded in 1848, the city's name comes from the name of the first immigrant ship. [Taniuchi Tatsu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
