Kurobe Dam

Japanese:
Kurobe Dam

This dam is located in the Kurobe Gorge between Mt. Tateyama and Mt. Akazawadake in the Northern Alps in the southeastern part of Toyama Prefecture. It belongs to Tateyama Town. Since construction began in 1956, Kansai Electric Power Company invested 51.3 billion yen and 9.9 million workers in 6 years and 10 months, and it was completed in 1963 together with the Kurobe River No. 4 Power Station. The dam is an arch-type dome dam with a height of 186 meters, a bank length of 492 meters, and a volume of 1.575 million cubic meters. Lake Kurobe is 237 times the size of Koshien Baseball Stadium, and has a storage capacity of 200 million tons. During construction, it was called Kuroshio Dam, as it was the dam for the Kurobe River No. 4 Power Station. The temporary construction work for the dam was carried out by a route over Mt. Tateyama, but the transportation of large amounts of materials for the main construction was carried out through the Kansai Electric Power Tunnel that ran directly under Mt. Akazawadake. This tunnel construction was difficult due to the large spring water. Currently, an underground power plant is located 10 kilometers downstream, with a head of 576 meters, a maximum water flow of 72 tons per second, and four generators generating 335,000 kilowatts of electricity.

After the dam was completed, the route for transporting materials from Omachi in Nagano Prefecture became a tourist route, and along with the later opened Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, it has become a tourist destination. On the left bank of the dam site is a wharf for sightseeing boats on Lake Kurobe. Mount Akaushidake (2,864 meters) towers in front of the upstream of Lake Kurobe, with Mount Tateyama on the left bank and Mount Akazawadake (2,678 meters), Mount Subari, and Mount Harinokidake (2,821 meters) on the right bank. On the left bank downstream of the dam is Mount Kurobebessan (2,353 meters) and its cliffs.

Kurobe Dam
A hydroelectric dam located upstream on the Kurobe River. It was completed in 1963 after difficult construction work that claimed many lives. During construction, it was called "Kurobe 4 Dam" because it was the dam for the Kurobe River No. 4 Power Station. It is an arch dome dam with a dam length of 492m, a dam height of 186m (the longest in Japan), and a water storage capacity of approximately 200 million tons.
