Waugh, Evelyn Arthur St. John
Born: October 28, 1903, London
[died] 10 April 1966. Combe Flory, Somerset. British novelist. Studied at Oxford University, his first novel, Decline and Fall (1928), won him acclaim. Converted to Catholicism in 1930, and published Vile Bodies in the same year. In 1932, he wrote Black Mischief, a satirical caricature set in the fictional African country of Azania, depicting conflicts between the natives and the ridiculousness of white diplomats. It was inspired by his travels to Ethiopia and other places as a correspondent for The Times. In A Handful of Dust (34), he caricatures the disintegration of the life of an upper-class couple living in an old country house, and in his magnum opus, Brideshead Revisited (45), he tells the story of the decline of an upper-class Catholic family through the recollections of an officer, and also tackles issues such as the Catholic way of life and the rationalism of intellectuals. "The Loved One" (48) depicts the state of an American funeral director, satirizing the uniformity of American civilization and displaying his unique black humor. He served in World War II and wrote the military trilogy "Sword of Honour" (52-61).
