The word "mode" did not exist in traditional Japanese music, but was created in the Meiji period. It distinguishes the relationship between ritsu and ro or hanritsu hanro in gagaku as ritsusen (ho) and rosen (ho). This uses the five-tone (pentatonic scale) obtained by the method of sanbun sen'en as the basic scale, and when the tonic note is placed on the first degree (miya) it is called rosen, and when it is placed on the fifth degree (sho) it is called ritsusen.
