Born July 11, 1811 in Swansea, Wales. [Died] August 1, 1896. London. British lawyer and physicist. Educated at Oxford University and Lincoln Law School, he was admitted to the bar (1835), but due to ill health he turned to scientific research and became professor of physics at the London Institution (1840-47). Later he returned to the legal profession, serving as a judge of the High Civil Court (1871-87). After retiring from the legal profession he devoted himself to scientific research. He established the thermal dissociation of atoms within a molecule, and demonstrated that water decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen on a hot platinum wire. In 1839 he invented a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell, which was used to light an arc lamp. He is famous for his work On the Correlation of Physical Forces (46), which predates Helmholtz in its theory of the interconversion of natural forces. He was knighted in 1872. Gloves |
