It was built by Emperor Justinian I, at great expense, by two Greek architects of Asian origin, Antemios of Tralles (Lydia) and Isidorus of Miletus, and was completed in 537. With an atrium and narthex at the front, the basilica portion alone was huge, measuring 77 meters in length and 71.7 meters in width.
