Tomioka Koiyama Opening
Kabuki kyogen. Commonly known as "Ninin Shinbei." Written by Namiki Gohei the first. First performed in January 1798 (Kansei 10) at Edo Kiriza as the second sewa kyogen of "Kiso Hajime Koso De Soga." Ichikawa Yaozo III plays Tamaya Shinbei, Sawamura Sojuro III plays Demura Shinbei, and Segawa Kikunojo III plays Mikuniya Kojoro and Oen. Based on an old folk song from around the Genroku period (1688-1704) about the love story between Tamaya Shinbei and a prostitute from a port in Mikuni, Echizen. Gohei, who was known as Gohachi in Osaka in 1775 (An'ei 4), dealt with this subject in his play "Mikuni Minato Meisho Katabira."
