A limestone stratum distributed widely from the central to southern parts of the Ryukyu Islands. It originated from a coral reef in the Quaternary Pleistocene of the Cenozoic Era. It accounts for about 30% of the total area of Okinawa Prefecture, forming plateaus and capes. It has been used as a building material since ancient times, and can be seen in Shuri Castle and the stone-paved roads. Source: About Shogakukan Digital Daijisen Information | Legend |
