Vallotton - Felix Edouard Vallotton

Swiss-born French painter and printmaker. Born in Lausanne, he died in Paris. In 1882 he went to Paris to become a painter and studied at the Académie Julian. He exhibited his work for the first time at the Salon in 1885. In the 1990s he displayed outstanding skills in woodblock prints and lithographs. In particular, in his woodblock prints, which he began working on in 1891, he established a decorative and expressive style that clearly showed Japanese influence, with simplified forms and flat patterns with strong contrasts between black and white. In 1993 he began exhibiting works together with the Nabis, which were formed in the late 1980s by students of the Académie Julian. He painted street and interior scenes in a flat style, but because of the radical social consciousness evident in his prints, he occupied a unique position among the Nabis, who tended to be conservative and mystical. However, after his marriage in 1899, his social consciousness gradually faded, and he focused his efforts on oil painting, producing still lifes, interiors, landscapes, and other works with a tranquil and realistic depiction.
