[Establishment of Factories in Japan]
In Japan, factories equipped with machinery (working machines, power machines) were first established by the shogunate and powerful feudal domains as foreign pressure intensified toward the end of the Edo period. Representative examples include the shogunate's Uraga Shipyard (1853), Nagasaki Ironworks (1861), Sekiguchi Manufacturing Works (1863), and Yokosuka Ironworks (1864), the Mito domain's Ishikawajima Shipyard (1854), and the Satsuma domain's Kagoshima Shuseikan (1857) and Kagoshima Spinning Mill (1867). With the exception of Kagoshima Spinning Mill, all were military factories aimed at manufacturing weapons and warships, and were established by importing machinery and equipment from the Netherlands or France and employing foreign engineers and craftsmen.

　日本において機械(作業機，動力機)を備えた工場は，江戸時代末期に外圧が強まるなかで幕府および雄藩によって初めて設立された。幕府の浦賀造船所(1853)，長崎製鉄所(1861)，関口製造所(1863)，横須賀製鉄所(1864)，水戸藩の石川島造船所(1854)，薩摩藩の鹿児島集成館(1857)，鹿児島紡績所(1867)などがその代表的なものである。鹿児島紡績所以外は，いずれも兵器･軍艦製造を目的とした軍事工場であり，オランダまたはフランスから機械･設備を輸入し，外国人技師および職人を雇って創設された。…
