Kurosawa Kinko

Japanese:
Kurosawa Kinko

The stage name of the successive heads of the Kinko-ryu shakuhachi school. The first head (1710-71) was a samurai of the Kuroda clan in Chikuzen (Fukuoka prefecture), and his real name was Kohachi. He converted to the Fuke sect and became a komuso (a Buddhist monk) and traveled around the country. At the age of 19, he was initiated into the Koden Sankyoku (three ancient songs) by Ikkei at Shojuken in Nagasaki, and also collected shakuhachi pieces handed down in various regions, forming the basis for the 36 pieces that would later become the Kinko-ryu honkyoku (main songs). In 18th century Kyoto and Edo, shakuhachi lessons were given to the general public with the official approval of the Fuke sect, and he was active as a fukiawase (shakuhachi instructor) and a maker of shakuhachi at the Edo fukiawase-sho (shakuhachi training centers) of Ichigatsuji and Reihoji temples. The second (1747-1811) and third (1772-1816) generations were both succeeded by their own children. The "Kinko Techo" written by the third generation is the only document handed down by the head family. The name of the shakuhachi master died out with the fourth generation (?-1860).
