Born August 17, 1786 in Rogersville, Tennessee
[Died] March 6, 1836. Alamo, Texas. American frontier pioneer and politician. During his lifetime, he was a legendary figure, known for having successfully killed a bear and for being a brave warrior who fought against Indians, but after his death, he became a mythical figure in American folklore through his heroic adventures and tall tales. After gaining fame fighting Indians under the command of A. Jackson in the Creek War (1813-14), he served as a member of the Tennessee State Assembly in 1821 and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives several times from 1823, earning him the nickname "the congressman in a raccoon skin." However, during his time as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, he became an opponent of Jackson, and eventually joined the U.S. Army in an attempt to separate Texas from Mexico, fighting against the Mexican army at the Alamo and dying in battle. Many "Crockett records" have been published since 1835, and his autobiography, written with the help of T. Chilton, influenced later American literature.

アメリカの辺境開拓者，政治家。生前からクマ殺しに成功した男といわれたり，インディアンと戦った勇敢な戦士とされたりした伝説的な人物であったが，死後には勇壮な冒険談やほら話を通してアメリカ民話の神話的な人物となった。クリーク戦争 (1813～14) において A.ジャクソン指揮下にインディアンと戦い勇名をはせてから，1821年にテネシー州議会議員，23年以降数回連邦下院議員をつとめ，「アライグマの皮を着た国会議員」の異名を取った。しかし連邦下院議員時代にジャクソンの反対派に転じ，やがてメキシコからのテキサス分離を目指してアメリカ軍に身を投じ，アラモでメキシコ軍と戦い戦死した。 35年以降多くの「クロケット情報録」が出ており，また T.チルトンの助力を受けて書かれた自叙伝はのちのアメリカ文学に影響を与えた。
