Former spelling Cuyabá. Capital of Mato Grosso State, in the central west of Brazil. The main settlement is located at the southwest foot of the Mato Grosso Plateau, at an altitude of 220m, overlooking the Cuiabá River, a tributary of the Paraguay River. The town was founded in 1719 by people who came in search of gold, and although gold and diamonds are still produced in the surrounding area, it is now the center of cattle ranching and agriculture, distributing beef cattle, leather, meat, rubber, and palm nuts. It is also the location of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (1970). It is a key location for road transport, connecting with São Paulo via Campo Grande in the south, and a major road runs from the capital Brasilia to Porto Velho in the west. In 1976, the TransAmazon Highway was built to connect the city with Santarem, a river port on the lower Amazon River. Water transport is also thriving, and regular ferries run between the city and Corumba, a river port on the border with Bolivia. Population: 401,112 (1991 estimate).
