When a pure solvent and a solution (or a dilute solution and a concentrated solution) come into contact with each other across a semipermeable membrane, the solvent spontaneously moves through the semipermeable membrane in the direction of diluting the solution. This is a general property of solutions. As a result of osmosis, the pressure on the solution side increases. Conversely, to prevent osmosis, excess pressure must be applied to the solution side. The osmosis of water from water through an animal membrane (e.g., pig bladder membrane) into a sugar solution is the most well-known example.
