A type of waist-framed petticoat worn by women in 16th-century Europe to keep their skirts open. It first appeared in the Spanish court fashion at the end of the 15th century, and spread to England and France. It is thought to have originally been made from young branches, and its name comes from the Spanish word verdugo, meaning young branch, and in France it was called vertugadin. Its outer shape is bell-shaped or inverted funnel-shaped, and is made by layering rattan, whalebone, wire, etc. in several loops and stretching linen over them. In Spain, it was mainly cone-shaped, but in England, drum-shaped ones with wheel-shaped waistbands were also popular.
