…In the northern part of the Indian subcontinent, along the southern foot of the Siwalik Hills at the southernmost tip of the Himalayas, a swampy lowland stretching 30-50 km wide from east to west along the border between Nepal and India. It is also called the Terai. It was once covered with dense forests of subtropical trees including the sal tree, and was known as a habitat for large wild animals such as tigers, leopards, and Indian rhinoceroses.
