From the meaning of "lot," this word came to mean "land divided by drawing lots." In Doric dialect, it was klaros. In Greek cities, the general rule was that members of the citizen body or civic community were owners of klaros, which was a privately owned hereditary farmland that each citizen cultivated with the labor of his or her family to support economic independence. Hesiod mentions the buying and selling of klaros, but in order to maintain the community, the movement of klaros was undesirable, so various community regulations were often imposed and buying and selling was sometimes prohibited.
