1723‐1803 French tragic actress. Her real name was Claire Josèphe Leris de la Tude. She was a member of the Comédie-Française from 1743 to 1766. She premiered tragedies by Marmontel, Crébillon, and Voltaire, and in Voltaire's Les Orphans de China (1755), she attempted reforms such as using Chinese-style costumes. She was known for her intelligent acting, and even Voltaire expressed admiration for her dedication to researching her roles. Her Mémoires (1798) is a valuable resource for 18th-century theater.
