This refers to industries such as shipbuilding, construction, and industrial machinery, where producers (manufacturers) only begin production after receiving an order from the consumer. This term is used in contrast to market-based industries that are based on forecast production. In order-based industries, the specifications required by clients are highly individual, so even if standard products are produced in anticipation, they will not sell. In addition, the price per unit is often extremely high, and they take a long time to complete. Therefore, the payment is usually made in several installments: at the time of contract, at an appropriate intermediate time, and when the product is delivered. During periods of rapid inflation, it may not be profitable to use the price at the time of order, and an inflation-adjusted price sliding system may be introduced.
