A former town in Miyaki County, eastern Saga Prefecture. It occupies the alluvial plain on the west bank of the Chikugo River in the northern part of the Saga Plain. During the Keicho era, Narutomi Shigeyasu built the Chikugo River embankment, Chiriku Doi, which successfully controlled flooding. The town produces mainly rice, but is also thriving in the cultivation of vegetables, wheat, and soybeans, and dairy farming. It is home to Chiri Hachiman Shrine, one of the Kyushu Five Hachiman Shrines. In March 2005, it merged with Nakahara Town and Mine Town in Miyaki County to become a town, called Miyaki Town. 佐賀県東部,三養基(みやき)郡の旧町。佐賀平野北部,筑後川西岸の沖積地を占める。慶長年間成富茂安が筑後川の提防千栗(ちりく)土居を築いて治水に成功した。米を主産し,野菜・麦・大豆の栽培,酪農が盛ん。九州五社八幡の一つ千栗八幡宮がある。2005年3月三養基郡中原町,三根町と合併し町制,みやき町となる。16.62km2。1万1223人(2003)。
