The most important member of a line of leading French musicians that continued for over 250 years, he was called "Grand Couperin" or "Francois II" to distinguish him from his uncle of the same name, Francois I (c. 1631-1708-12). Francois was born in the lodgings of the church of Saint-Gervais, where his father, Charles II C. (1638-79), was the organist, and he received organ lessons from his father from an early age.
