A former town in Soo District, northern Osumi Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture. The town is entirely on hills and is low in productivity due to the volcanic ash soil called bora. The town produces beef cattle, vegetables, tea, and also engages in forestry. In January 2006, it was incorporated into Kanoya City along with Gohira Town and Kushira Town in Kimotsuki District. 鹿児島県大隅半島北部,曾於(そお)郡の旧町。全町丘陵地でボラと呼ばれる火山灰地のため生産力が低い。肉牛,野菜,茶などを産し,林業も行う。2006年1月肝属郡吾平町,串良町と鹿屋市へ編入。88.95km2。4434人(2003)。
