[Died] March 1, 1633. Bemerton English poet and clergyman. Brother of Herbert of Cherbury. Graduated from Cambridge University. A brilliant young man from a distinguished family, he was expected to play an active role at court, but he ended his life quietly as a "country priest." Just before his death, he sent a collection of poems called The Temple (1633) to his friend Nicholas Ferrer, asking him to publish or burn it, and this has established him as a religious metaphysical poet.

Herbert, Sidney, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea

Born: 16 September 1810, Richmond, Surrey
[Died] August 2, 1861. Salisbury, Wiltshire. British politician. Studied at Oxford University, and was a member of the House of Commons from 1832 onwards. He distinguished himself as a member of the Peelite faction and served as a cabinet minister. During the Crimean War, he worked with F. Nightingale as Secretary of State for War, and contributed to improving the sanitary conditions of the military. He was made a baron in 1860.
