Born April 3, 1593, Montgomery, Wales [Died] March 1, 1633. Bemerton English poet and clergyman. Brother of Herbert of Cherbury. Graduated from Cambridge University. A brilliant young man from a distinguished family, he was expected to play an active role at court, but he ended his life quietly as a "country priest." Just before his death, he sent a collection of poems called The Temple (1633) to his friend Nicholas Ferrer, asking him to publish or burn it, and this has established him as a religious metaphysical poet.
