A railway tunnel that crosses the Apennine Mountains between Bologna and Florence in central Italy. Construction began in 1920, was completed in 1931, and began operation in 1934. It is a long, double-track tunnel with a length of 18,518 m, and for a long time it was the second longest tunnel after the Simplon Tunnel (but the longest of all double-track tunnels). In addition, compared to the Mont Cenis Tunnel (length 13,657 m) on the French-Italian border, which opened in 1884, the Mont Cenis Tunnel overcame poor geological conditions and was completed in a short period of time with 1.97 million m3 of excavation (with a tunnel cross-section width of 9.4 m and height of 8.3 m), making it a symbol of the development of tunnel technology at the time.
