Also called Taungs, it is the name of a place in the Republic of South Africa, but it is known worldwide as the name of the ruins in the limestone area nearby where the first ape-man fossils were discovered. The ape-man fossil unearthed in Taung is the skull of an infant often called the "Taung Baby," and this skull is sometimes simply called Taung. The scientific name is Australopithecus africanus.
