Also called Taungs, it is the name of a place in the Republic of South Africa, but it is known worldwide as the name of the ruins in the limestone area nearby where the first ape-man fossils were discovered. The ape-man fossil unearthed in Taung is the skull of an infant often called the "Taung Baby," and this skull is sometimes simply called Taung. The scientific name is Australopithecus africanus. タウングズTaungsともいわれ，南アフリカ共和国内の一地名であるが，その近くの石灰岩地帯にある遺跡で猿人の最初の化石が発見されたことから，その遺跡名として世界的に知られる。タウング出土の猿人化石は，よく〈タウング･ベービー〉と呼ばれている幼児の頭骨で，この頭骨を単にタウングと呼ぶこともある。学名はアウストラロピテクス･アフリカヌス。【岩本光雄】
