A French deposit bank with one of the world's largest deposit volumes. Founded in 1863 in Lyon by silk merchants and metallurgists from the Lyon region, Crédit Lyonnais started out as a regional bank with branches in the south of France, but between 1879 and 1882 it opened 63 branches in Paris and other major cities across the country, moved its headquarters from Lyon to Paris, and transformed into one of France's leading national banks alongside Société Générale. Crédit Lyonnais continued to expand its branch network, and by the eve of World War I, it had over 380 branches in France alone, and its deposit volume was the largest of any bank in Europe.

フランスの預金銀行。預金高は世界有数。1863年にリヨン地方の絹商人および冶金業者たちによってリヨンに創設された。フランス南部に支店網をもつ地方銀行として出発したが，1879‐82年に，パリ市内と全国の主要諸都市に一挙に63の店舗を開設するとともに，本店機能をリヨンからパリに移し，ソシエテ･ジェネラルと並んでフランスを代表する全国銀行に転身した。クレディ･リヨネは，以後も支店網の拡充に努め，第1次世界大戦前夜までに，店舗数はフランス国内だけで380余を数え，預金額はヨーロッパの銀行中第1位の水準に達するにいたった。
