Arai Hakuga

Arai Hakuga

A Confucian scholar of the mid-Edo period. His name was Suketaka, his pen name was Kenkichi, and he was commonly known as Oribe. In addition to Shiraga, he was also known by the names Koshu, Ryuzan, and Koekikan. He was from Edo, and studied under Sugano Kenzan (1680-1747) of the Kimon school (a branch of Neo-Confucianism founded by Yamazaki Ansai), and later moved to Kyoto to study the Book of Changes, becoming famous as a scholar of the Book of Changes and fortune-telling. He was invited by the Kaga domain to become head of the Meirindo domain school when it was founded, and was given a stipend of 300 koku. He died in Kanazawa. He has written many books on the study of I Ching, including "Familiar Thoughts on the Ancient I Ching," "Complete Explanations of the Classic of I Ching from Ancient Zhou," "Complete Explanations of the Times of the Ancient I Ching," "The Essence of the Ancient I Ching," "Shosen of the Study of I Ching," and "Discovering Diseases of the Ancient I Ching."

江戸中期の儒学者。名は祐登(すけたか)、字(あざな)は謙吉(けんきつ)、通称は織部(おりべ)。白蛾のほか黄洲(こうしゅう)、竜山(りゅうざん)、古易館(こえきかん)などと号した。江戸の人で、崎門(きもん)学派(山崎闇斎(やまざきあんさい)を祖とする朱子学の一派)の菅野兼山(すがのけんざん)(1680―1747)に学び、のち京都に移って周易を研究し、易学者、占筮(せんぜい)家として著名になった。加賀藩に招かれて藩校明倫堂(めいりんどう)創設のとき学頭となり、禄(ろく)300石。金沢に没した。『古易一家言』『古周易経断』『古易断時言』『古易精義』『易学小筌(しょうせん)』『古易察病伝』など易学に関する著作が多い。
