Japanese: 化粧セッケン(化粧石鹼) - けしょうせっけん（英語表記）toilet soap

This is soap for washing the face and hands, and in a broad sense also includes bath soap. The main base is higher fatty acid salt, but the oil from which it is made is mainly beef tallow, which is rich in oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid, giving it cleaning power and hardness. Coconut oil is added to improve foaming properties, and rice bran oil is added to increase cleaning properties. However, the lower fatty acids contained in coconut oil can irritate the skin, so methods are used to improve foaming properties, etc., using synthetic detergents. To reduce irritation to the skin, it is preferable to keep the pH slightly lower (pH 5-7), and this is adjusted using synthetic detergents such as higher alcohol sulfates and non-ionic surfactants.

洗顔，手洗い用のセッケンで，広義には浴用セッケンも含めていう。おもな基剤は高級脂肪酸塩であるが，その原料となる油脂は牛脂が主体であって，オレイン酸，パルミチン酸，ステアリン酸に富み，洗浄力および硬さを与える。起泡性をよくするためにヤシ油，洗浄性を高めるために米ぬか油を加える。しかしヤシ油に含まれる低級脂肪酸が皮膚に刺激を与える場合もあり，起泡性などを合成洗剤等で改善する方法もとられている。皮膚への刺激を弱めるためにはpHをやや低くすることが好ましく(pH5～7)，高級アルコール硫酸エステル類や非イオン活性剤等の合成洗剤を用いて調整される。
