Also known as congenital hypothyroidism. A disease caused by a congenital lack or underfunction of the thyroid gland, which inhibits growth, causes poor height and weight gain, and retards intellectual development. The skin becomes dry and edematous. The thyroid gland may also be enlarged. Symptoms appear within one year of birth.
