Also known as congenital hypothyroidism. A disease caused by a congenital lack or underfunction of the thyroid gland, which inhibits growth, causes poor height and weight gain, and retards intellectual development. The skin becomes dry and edematous. The thyroid gland may also be enlarged. Symptoms appear within one year of birth. Administration of thyroid hormone significantly improves both physical and intellectual development.

先天性甲状腺機能低位症ともいう。先天的に甲状腺の欠損または機能低下のために，成長発育が阻害され身長・体重増加不良で知能の発達も遅れる病気。皮膚は乾燥し浮腫状を呈する。甲状腺が腫大していることもある。生後１年以内に症状が発現する。甲状腺ホルモンの投与により，身体発育，知能の発達ともにかなり改善される。
