An Indian thinker from the 6th to 5th century BCE. One of the Six Heretical Masters. He preached materialism and the theory of pleasure. According to him, only the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air are truly real, and he recognized the existence of space as the place where these elements exist and are active. Humans are composed of these four elements, and when we die, the earth that makes up a human being returns to the collection of earth, the water to the collection of water, and the air to the collection of air, and the abilities of the various organs return to space. Humans themselves become nothing at death, and there is no such thing as a soul apart from the body. He said that there is no present life or afterlife, and no reward for good or bad deeds, so rituals, donations, and sacrifices are meaningless. In this way, he completely denied the authority of the old Brahmanism. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
