Samuel Clegg

Japanese: クレッグ(英語表記)Samuel Clegg
Samuel Clegg
1781‐1861
British gas engineer. Born in Manchester, he received his scientific education under chemist J. Dalton. In 1805, he became an apprentice at the firm of Boulton and Watt, where he witnessed W. Murdoch's experiments with coal-fired gas lighting at the Soho works. To improve gas purification, he invented a lime desulfurization device, and in 1814 became an engineer for the London Chartered Gas Company. In 1815 and 1818, he invented and patented the wet meter, which later became the foundation for measuring gas volume. After that, he worked on the construction of gas plants for several years, but his business in Liverpool failed and he went bankrupt, and he started anew as an engineer employed by the Portuguese government, where he was in charge of the construction of the Lisbon Mint.
