A diagram showing the earth's surface as seen from above at an angle. It is also called a bird's-eye view. It is often used for undulating terrain. It shows a sense of depth and perspective well, making it easy to grasp the condition of the land. However, like a map, it is difficult to correctly interpret distance, direction, and area. It also has the disadvantage that the more distant the area, the more omitted it is, and the other side of mountains and hills is not shown. Buildings and trees are often depicted pictorially in a way that is close to the real thing, and they are used in tourist guide maps.
