...As Kievan Rus's status as the Grand Prince of Kievan Rus's state declined, it developed into one of the powerful principalities, and by the end of the 12th century it was called a Grand Duchy. Initially, the principalities of Galich and Volyn were separate and neighboring states, but in 1199, Roman Mstislavich (?-1205), Prince of Volyn, annexed Galich to form a single principality, and adopted the title of Grand Duke. Located in the southwest of Kievan Rus's borders with Poland and Hungary, and in the area along the Danube River, it was also in a position to become connected with the Byzantine Empire, and so it had to deal with intervention from these countries and raids by the Polovtsian people. ...
