1809‐1903 British meteorologist and astronomer. He is said to have been largely self-taught, but in 1833 he caught the eye of astronomer GB Airy and began his research at the Cambridge Observatory. In 1835 he moved to the Greenwich Observatory, where he became head of the department of geomagnetism and meteorology. In 1849 he contributed greatly to the establishment of the meteorological service, including by publishing the results of meteorological observations from all over the UK in the Daily News. In 1862 he took a free balloon with HT Coxwell, ascending to an altitude of 11 km and conducting upper-altitude observations, and by 1866 he had made dozens more upper-altitude observations.
