A small native goat (illustration) that has long been kept on the west coast of Nagasaki Prefecture and on the Goto Islands. It weighs 20-28kg. Its coat is mostly white, and both males and females are horned but lack wavy whiskers. It is capable of breeding year-round, but most give birth in April and May. Litter sizes are 1-3 (average 1.8). It is docile and easy to care for, and has a high resistance to disease. Originally bred for meat and fertilizer, it has recently been attracting attention for its usefulness as an experimental animal due to its aforementioned characteristics. Goat [Masada Yoichi]

長崎県の西海岸と五島列島に古くから飼われている小型の在来ヤギ（イラスト）。体重20～28kg。毛色は白が多く，雌雄とも有角で肉髯（にくぜん）はない。周年繁殖が可能であるが，4～5月に分娩（ぶんべん）のものが多い。産子数は1～3頭(平均1.8頭)。性質は温順で飼いやすく，病気に対する抵抗性も高い。本来，肉用･採肥用に飼育されていたが，前記の特性から最近では実験用動物としての有用性が着目されている。ヤギ【正田陽一】
