A small native goat (illustration) that has long been kept on the west coast of Nagasaki Prefecture and on the Goto Islands. It weighs 20-28kg. Its coat is mostly white, and both males and females are horned but lack wavy whiskers. It is capable of breeding year-round, but most give birth in April and May. Litter sizes are 1-3 (average 1.8). It is docile and easy to care for, and has a high resistance to disease. Originally bred for meat and fertilizer, it has recently been attracting attention for its usefulness as an experimental animal due to its aforementioned characteristics. Goat [Masada Yoichi]
