A type of weapon used by Latin American Indians. In Spanish, it is called boleadras. A stone ball is attached to the end of a long string, which is held above the head and swung to throw, causing the ball to entangle an animal's legs and knock it down. There are single balls, pairs, or sets of two or three balls, and they are sometimes wrapped in animal skin. They were primarily used for hunting, but were also used in wars between ethnic groups and against the Spaniards. In modern times, they have been used mainly by gauchos in Uruguay and Argentina, but single-ball versions are used by the Uru people for duck hunting.
