Umberto Eco

Japanese: エーコ - えーこ(英語表記)Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco

Italian critic, aesthetician, semiotician, and novelist. He studied aesthetics at the University of Turin. He wrote The Aesthetic Problem in Thomas Aquinas (1956) and The Open Work (1962), which defined the new trend in contemporary art as the "open work" and discussed Joyce's literature based on his own work. He joined the Neo-avant-garde (1963 group) and, together with Sanguineti, Albasino, Balestrini, and others, advocated anti-realism in literature, and participated in the anti-establishment movement of the magazine Quindici. In the field of philosophy, he wrote The Structure of Absence (1962), Forms of Content (1971), and Semiotics (1975, English version 1976). He became a professor at the University of Bologna in 1971, and published the novel The Name of the Rose (1980), which attracted worldwide attention. His other works include the novels Foucault's Pendulum (1988) and The Island of the Day Before (1994), as well as the autobiographical Baudolino (2000).
