A general term for receptors that receive thermal stimuli and transmit information about the temperature of the outside world, including warm receptors and cold receptors. In vertebrates, they generally exist as sensory points on the skin, and are called warm spots and cold spots, respectively. In a certain temperature range, warm receptors not only show a static response adapted to each temperature when the temperature suddenly changes, but also temporarily increase their response to an increase in temperature and temporarily decrease their response to a decrease in temperature. In contrast, cold receptors generally have a lower static response range than warm receptors, and show a temporary decrease in response to an increase in temperature and a temporary increase in response to a decrease in temperature.

温度刺激を受けとって，外界の温度に関する情報を伝える受容器の総称で，温受容器と冷受容器がある。脊椎動物では一般に皮膚上の感覚点として存在し，それぞれ温点および冷点と呼ばれる。温受容器は特定の温度範囲では，温度が急に変化すると各温度に順応した静的応答を示すほかに，温度の上昇に対しては一時的に応答が増加し温度の下降に対しては一時的に減少する。これに対して冷受容器は静的応答範囲が温受容器よりも一般に低い方にあり，温度の上昇に対しては一時的な応答の減少，温度の下降に対して一時的な応答の増加を示す。
