A middle-period Stoic philosopher of ancient Greece. Born in Apamea, Syria. He studied under Panaetius in Athens, and traveled through various parts of the Mediterranean before settling on the island of Rhodes. His academic interests were wide-ranging, and his contribution to the synthesis of Hellenistic culture is comparable to that of Aristotle. He taught Cicero, and had a major influence on poets and writers such as Lucretius, Virgil, and Seneca, and on historians such as Sallust, Caesar, Tacitus, and Plutarch. His philosophy of history, which advocated the relationship and harmony between the divine kingdom of "cosmopolis" and earthly nations, also became the governing principle of the actual Roman Empire. Few fragments of his writings remain. [Yoshihide Tanaka February 17, 2015] [References] | | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
