In the second half of the 16th century, Siberia came to share a direct border with Russia, which was expanding eastward, and in 1582, the capital was occupied by the Cossacks led by Elmakh. The Siberian Khanate continued to resist under the leadership of Kuchum Khan (died 1600), but in 1598 it suffered a decisive defeat and the territory of the Sibir Khanate was incorporated into the Russian Empire.
