Chutaro Kikuchi

...Takeuchi's "Gigaiten," Takamura's "Old Monkey," and Ishikawa's "White-robed Kannon" were exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, and these were representative woodcarvings of the Meiji period. Meanwhile, Naganuma Moriyoshi, Kikuchi Chutaro (1859-1944), and Okuma Ujihiro participated in the Meiji Art Association, which established a sculpture department, and in 1899, a Western-style sculpture course was established at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, from which Okakura and others had left. Naganuma was the first professor of sculpture at the school, and he was soon succeeded by Fujita Bunzo, and the school nurtured such artists as Shirai Uzan (1864-1928), Watanabe Takeo (1876-1952), Takeishi Kozaburo (1878-1963), and Takamura Kotaro. ...
