…After studying under the Islamic scholar Hilgroene at Leiden University and obtaining his doctorate, he worked for the Dutch East Indies government while also teaching anthropology and sociology at the Higher Law School in Batavia (now the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia). He was invited to the United States in 1934-35, and the results of his research there were highly praised as a “foreign American.” After 1936, he returned to the Netherlands and became professor of colonial ethnology at the University of Amsterdam. …
