Clinker - Clinker (English spelling)

A lump that is molten, partially molten, or semi-molten is also called a molten lump. For example,

(1) A portion of the ash left in a kiln by the combustion of fuel. If the ash contains a large amount of flux (a substance that, when mixed with another substance, lowers the melting point of that substance; sometimes called a flux or fluxing agent), it reaches its melting point below the temperature to which the ash is exposed, and as a result begins to melt and adhere to the grates and walls of the kiln.

(2) A mass obtained by burning a mixture of limestone and clay at a temperature at which it begins to melt. This type of clinker can be ground to produce hydraulic cements such as Portland cement.

(3) Brick or tile in a highly fused state, as distinguished from porous ones.

(4) Bricks that have been accidentally over-fired during firing, resulting in a partially molten state and deformation. In the case of bricks, they are called over-fired bricks.
