Greeley, Horace

Greeley, Horace
Born: February 3, 1811, Amherst, New Hampshire
Died November 29, 1872. New York American newspaper editor and political leader. Born into a poor farming family, he did not receive a formal education. He went to New York at the age of 20, worked as a printer, and then became a printing factory manager. In 1834, he became editor-in-chief of the literary magazine The New Yorker, but as an ardent patriot, he participated in the founding of the Republican Party and published two other weekly magazines for political campaigns. In April 1841, he founded the daily newspaper The New York Tribune, which aimed to reform political education, economic development, and improve the knowledge of the masses. Its editorials had a strong political influence. Politically, he was a utopian socialist in the style of C. Fourier, but was also a conservative who did not like radical change. He also strongly advocated the abolition of slavery, and supported Lincoln's presidential bid in 1860. He also ran for president himself in 1872, but lost. He died in despair, leaving behind debts. His clear-spoken actions and strong convictions have earned him the title of the greatest editorial writer in the history of American journalism.
