West German actor and director. After working at the Hamburg Chamber Theater, he made his debut in Berlin in the late 1920s as a unique character actor. During the Nazi era, he became director of the Prussian National Theater under the patronage of Goering, and worked to maintain the standard of theatrical culture, but was also accused of collaborating with the Nazis. After the war, he became director in Düsseldorf and Hamburg, and in his production of Faust, in which he played Mephisto himself, he abandoned theatrical illusion and marked a period of directing that focused on actors.

西ドイツの俳優，演出家。ハンブルク室内劇場をへて1920年代末にベルリンで特異な性格俳優としてデビュー。ナチス時代にはゲーリングの庇護を受けてプロイセン国立劇場総監督となり，演劇文化の水準の維持に努めたが，反面ナチス協力の責任を問題にされることもある。戦後はデュッセルドルフ，ハンブルクで総監督となり，自らメフィストを演じた《ファウスト》では，劇のイリュージョンを放棄した，俳優を中心とする演出で一時期を画した。
