1899‐1963 West German actor and director. After working at the Hamburg Chamber Theater, he made his debut in Berlin in the late 1920s as a unique character actor. During the Nazi era, he became director of the Prussian National Theater under the patronage of Goering, and worked to maintain the standard of theatrical culture, but was also accused of collaborating with the Nazis. After the war, he became director in Düsseldorf and Hamburg, and in his production of Faust, in which he played Mephisto himself, he abandoned theatrical illusion and marked a period of directing that focused on actors.
