Chapman, George
[Born] 1559?. Hitchin
[Died] May 12, 1634, London. British poet, playwright, and translator of Homer. He is said to have studied at Oxford and Cambridge. Platonism is prominent in his poetry collections, such as The Shadow of Night...Two Poeticall Hymnes (1593). He turned to drama around 1596, and The Blind Beggar of Alexandria (1596) is the first surviving comedy, and he is said to have written a tragedy around 1598. In 1598, he completed Christopher Marlowe's unfinished mythological poem Hero and Leander, and published the first volume of his English translation of The Iliad in the same year, completing it in 1611. The Complete Poems of Homer, including his translation of The Odyssey (1614-15), was published in 1616. He also wrote To the East! He wrote comedies such as Eastward Ho (1604, in collaboration with Ben Jonson and others) and tragedies such as Bussy d'Ambois (1607) and The Conspiracie, and Tragedie of Charles Duke of Byron (1608).

[Died] November 7, 1933, London. British theologian and author. After graduating from Oxford University, he became a deacon in the Church of England, but converted to Roman Catholicism in 1890 and became a priest in 1893. He served as a military chaplain during World War I, and then entered Downside Abbey, becoming its abbot in 1929. His main work is Studies on the Eearly Papacy (1928).

イギリスの詩人,劇作家,ホメロスの翻訳者。オックスフォード大学,ケンブリッジ大学で学んだといわれる。『夜の影』The Shadow of Night...Two Poeticall Hymnes(1593)ほか数冊の詩集にはプラトン主義の影響が著しい。1596年頃劇作に転じ,『アレクサンドリアの盲乞食』The Blind Beggar of Alexandria(1596)が現存する最初の喜劇で,1598年頃には悲劇も書いたといわれる。1598年クリストファー・マーローの未完の神話詩『ヒアローとリアンダー』Hero and Leanderを完成,同 1598年『イリアス』の英訳の第1巻を出し,1611年に完結,『オデュッセイア』の訳(1614~15)を合わせた『ホメロス全詩集』は 1616年刊。ほかに『東方へ!』Eastward Ho(1604,ベン・ジョンソンらと合作)などの喜劇や『ビュッシ・ダンボア』Bussy d'Ambois(1607),『バイロン公シャルルの陰謀と悲劇』The Conspiracie, and Tragedie of Charles Duke of Byron(1608)などの悲劇を書いた。

イギリスの神学者。著作家。オックスフォード大学を卒業後,イギリス国教会の執事となったが,1890年にローマ・カトリックに改宗し,93年に司祭となった。第1次世界大戦に従軍司祭をつとめ,その後ダウンサイド修道院に入り,1929年に同修道院長となった。主著『初期教皇制度の研究』 Studies on the Eearly Papacy (1928) 。
