cofradía (English spelling)

...Each village has its own unique cultural type and social and religious organization, and there is no political unity in the Quiché-speaking region as a whole. There is a high degree of fusion between indigenous religion and Christianity, and many villages have developed cofradías, religious organizations named after Catholic saints. The main occupation is the cultivation of corn, beans, and pumpkins using slash-and-burn agriculture, but many villages also produce textiles and furniture, and the Guatemalan highlands, including the Quiché-speaking region, have a well-developed distribution economy through periodic markets.
