Yoshiko Kawashima

Japanese: 川島芳子 - かわしまよしこ

A spy during the Sino-Japanese War. She was the 14th princess of Prince Shu, Shanqi, a member of the imperial family at the end of the Qing Dynasty. She was also called Jin Bihui. In 1914, she was adopted by the continental wanderer Kawashima Naniwa and educated in Japan. In 1927, she married the second son of Mongolian general Papuzierchap, but divorced after a year. After her divorce, she attracted public attention by dressing like a man. Hoping to restore the Qing Dynasty, she engaged in intelligence activities under Tanaka Takayoshi of the Army Secret Service. When the Manchurian Incident occurred in 1931, she helped former Emperor Xuantong Puyi's wife Wanrong escape from Tianjin to Dalian, and orchestrated the attack on a Japanese monk that led to the outbreak of the Shanghai Incident the following year. Her sabotage activities earned her the nickname "Mata Hari of the East." He was executed in China in 1948 as a traitor.

日中戦争下のスパイ。中国清朝末の皇族粛(しゅく)親王善耆(ぜんき)の第14王女。金璧輝(きんへきき)とも名乗る。1914年大陸浪人川島浪速(なにわ)の養女となり，日本で教育を受ける。1927年蒙古の将軍パプジエルチャップの次男と結婚，１年余で離婚。離婚後は男装を通し世間の注目を浴びた。清朝の再興を期し，陸軍特務機関の田中隆吉(たかよし)のもとで諜報活動に従事。1931年満州事変が起こると，元宣統帝溥儀(ふぎ)の妃婉容(えんよう)を天津から大連に脱出させ，翌年上海事変勃発の契機となる日本人僧侶襲撃事件を仕組むなど，その工作活動から〈東洋のマタ・ハリ〉と呼ばれた。1948年漢奸として中国で処刑。
