Glycol - Glycol (English spelling)

A general term for alcohols with two hydroxyl groups in one molecule. The glycol with the simplest structure is commonly called ethylene glycol (1,2-ethanediol is the official name). It is produced by reacting ethylene CH ₂ ＝CH ₂ with oxygen to form ethylene oxide (ethylene oxide), and is sometimes abbreviated to glycol. Ethylene glycol has a higher boiling point and is more viscous than ethanol (ethyl alcohol) CH ₃ CH ₂ OH, which has the same number of carbons but only one hydroxyl group. Ethylene glycol is used to polycondense with terephthalic acid to produce a polyester called polyethylene glycol terephthalate. This polyester is not only widely used as a synthetic fiber, but is also used for various purposes such as the production of alkyd resin. Furthermore, ethylene glycol has a melting point of -12.6°C and a high boiling point of 197.6°C, and is also easily mixed with water, so it is also used as an antifreeze for cooling automobile engines. For these various uses, approximately 900,000 tons of ethylene glycol are produced annually in Japan.

The presence of two hydroxyl groups in one molecule is significant because the two hydroxyl groups are highly reactive and can react in two directions rather than just at one point on the molecule to create a larger molecule.

1分子中にヒドロキシ基を2個もつアルコールの総称。もっとも簡単な構造のグリコールは、慣用名エチレングリコール（1,2-エタンジオールが正式名）である。これは、エチレンCH₂＝CH₂を酸素と反応させてエチレンオキシド（酸化エチレン）とし、これから製造され、単にグリコールと略称されることもある。エチレングリコールは、これと炭素数が等しいがヒドロキシ基が1個しかないエタノール（エチルアルコール）CH₃CH₂OHに比べて沸点が高く、また粘稠(ねんちゅう)である。エチレングリコールはテレフタル酸と重縮合させてポリエチレングリコールテレフタレートとよばれるポリエステルを製造するのに用いられる。このポリエステルは合成繊維としても多く使用されるだけでなく、アルキド樹脂の製造など各種の目的に利用される。さらにエチレングリコールは融点が－12.6℃であるうえ、沸点が197.6℃と高く、しかも水とよく混合するので、自動車のエンジンの冷却用の不凍液としても用いられる。このような種々の用途のために、日本では年間約90万トンのエチレングリコールが生産されている。

　1分子の中に2個のヒドロキシ基があることは、2個のヒドロキシ基の反応性が高いため、分子の一つの箇所でなく二つの方向に向かって反応して、大きい分子をつくることができる意義がある。
