Iri Basin - Iribonchi

A basin in the southwest of Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, in the northwest of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It developed in the valley formed by the upper and middle reaches of the Ili River, and is sandwiched between the central Tianshan Mountains in the south and the Borohoro Mountains running west-northwest to the north. The Ili River gathers the Tekes River, the Kunes River, and the Kashi River, and flows westward toward Lake Balkhash in the Republic of Kazakhstan, so the basin also slopes gently westward and enters Kazakhstan. Rich forests and grasslands spread across the area, and livestock farming by Kazakhs and Mongolians is thriving. In particular, the area around Lake Sayram, 2,100 meters above sea level in the north, is a natural pasture called Lake Sayram Ranch, where Xinjiang fine-wool sheep and Ili horses are raised. Khorgas in the western part of the basin and Ghulja, the seat of the regional government in the center, are distribution centers for livestock products.

中国、新疆(しんきょう)ウイグル自治区北西部、イリ・カザフ自治州の南西部にある盆地。イリ川上・中流が形成する河谷に発達し、南側の天山山脈中央部と北側の西北西に走るボロホロ山に挟まれる。イリ川はテケス川、キュネス川、カシ川を集め、西方のカザフスタン共和国のバルハシ湖に向かって流れるため、盆地もまた西に向かいなだらかな傾斜をもち、カザフスタン領に入る。豊かな森林と大草原が広がり、カザフ人やモンゴル人による牧畜が盛んである。とくに北方の標高2100メートルのサイラム湖周辺は、サイラム湖牧場とよばれる天然の牧場で、新疆細毛ヒツジやイリ馬が飼育されている。盆地西部のコルガスや中央部の州政府所在地グルジャは畜産品の集散地である。
